Mauritius among the 21 countries in the world classified as a “Full Democracy”

Mauritius is ranked among the 21 countries considered as “Full Democracy” and the only country in Africa to be considered as such. This information was published by the Economist Intelligence Unit in its latest Democracy Index, last week.

In the previous report 2020, Mauritius was ranked 20th. Even with the Covid-19 pandemic and the sanitary restrictions in place, Mauritius ascended to 19th place.

Mauritius is the only democracy fully functional in Africa and on this list, there are 44 African countries.

Mauritius obtained a total score of 8.08 out of 10 in the democracy index.

5 essential criteria have been taken into account for the ranking of Mauritius for “Full Democracy”, in particular the electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of the government, the political participation, political culture and civil liberties. It is noted that Mauritius scored 9.17 out of 10 for its electoral process.

The Democracy Index is an index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research division of the Economist Group, a UK-based private company which publishes the weekly newspaper The Economist. Similar to the Human Development Index but centrally concerned with political institutions and freedoms, the index attempts to measure the state of democracy in 167 countries and territories.
